Ants are a really big deal in the tropics. Imagine collecting all of the ants in a rainforest. And then collecting all of the vertebrates (birds, reptiles, mammals, frogs - the things most people mean when they say "animal"). The ants would weigh more. The ants would also have way more species. One famous ant scientist found 200 species of ants on a single tree.
I saw many kinds of ants, and felt many more (some ants bite, others [the meaner ones] sting). Strangely, I saw no leaf cutters. I observed army ants, at night in hard rain, so I didn't photograph them. Here is a bit of video for a few ants I saw:
