We went to a big and crazy parade in the capital city of Cayenne. It seemed very African to me, bold colors, gold and silver head helmets and masks, lots of drums and brass. The people of Cayenne are French European, Portugese, Caribbean black, Vietnamese, and Amerindian. Very friendly. I was sorry that I could not talk to anyone, as I speak none of the many local languages.
The main way to see moths is with light traps. Of course the insects are varied and beautiful, but our catch has been low because it is cool – 70 F at night. Our bait traps catch some butterflies, including the huge iridescent blue morphos. But no white witch. One issue is that at night the baits – gross decaying bananas – are pretty quickly stolen, perhaps by opposums. It rains every hour of the day. The road has become a series of ponds.
