I went for a walk in light rain, and I mostly noticed the plants. Epiphytes (plants like orchids and bromeliads that grow without soil up in the trees) and vines hang heavily on the trees. I saw a lot of different kinds of ants, and got stung a few times—I’m learning that you have to be careful when you reach under logs to see what’s there. I’m told that army ants, which move in large numbers eating whatever is in their path, sometimes include the cabins in their raids. That would probably be unpleasant, but at least it would clear out any pest insects. Sensitive plants are everywhere. Birds are everywhere, which I know from the many noisy calls. But the only birds I actually saw were hummingbirds, which are much more common, and diverse, in the tropics.
I learned from Karolin that white witches have been seen in the last week. I’ll definitely look for them tonight, and will probably see a lot of the other nocturnal life. I’ll be looking for frogs, spiders, whip scorpions. I’m told there are just 2 snakes to watch out for: the fer-de-lance, a pit viper, and coral snakes. I hope to see these, but not too close.
